Fresh coat of paint for classics and forgotten treasures
Im Rahmen der jüngsten Zusammenarbeit legt Vitra vier Entwürfe von Jean Prouvé neu auf: Abat-Jour Conique, ein konischer Lampenschirm, den Prouvé 1947 für die Wandleuchte Potence entwickelte, die beiden Hocker Tabouret N° 307 und Tabouret Métallique sowie das Wandregal Rayonnage Mural. Außerdem bekommt die Farbpalette eine Überarbeitung um einige der ursprünglichen Prouvé-Farben. Zu den bisherigen Optionen Tiefschwarz, Japanrot und Blanc Colombe kommen Gris Vermeer, Bleu Dynastie, Blé Vert und Bleu Marcoule sowie die Variante Métal Brut in unlackiertem Stahl.

Jean Prouvé – pioneer of modular series production
Jean Prouvé, born in Nancy, France in 1901 to painter and sculptor Victor Prouvé and pianist Marie Duhamel, was trained as an artistic blacksmith. His entry into metalworking marked the beginning of his fully self-directed design practice, which initially focused on metal objects before slowly evolving into utilitarian furniture and home solutions. In his studios, founded in 1931, Prouvé experimented with materials such as steel and aluminum, combining aspects of functionality, material authenticity, economy and ecology in his unique designs. Sein beeindruckendes Oeuvre – vom Brieföffner über Tür- und Fensterbeschläge, Leuchten und Möbel bis hin zu Fertighäusern und modularen Bausystemen – beweist, dass Vielseitigkeit ihn auszeichnete und auch heute noch auszeichnet. Jean Prouvé prägte die Design- und Architekturlandschaft in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts und ebnete den Weg für die Fertigteilarchitektur und die Massenproduktion von Möbeln. Seine Schulbänke und Stühle, die für ihre zeitlose Ästhetik und dauerhafte Funktionalität gelobt werden, sind heute ein Traum für Sammler und erzielen auf dem Designmarkt täglich höhere Preise.
Standard sets standards
His most successful design, the Standard Chair model of 1934, which was perfected over time until it became a classic in 1950, has become an unobtrusive classic chair that can be found in its new editions in living rooms all over the world. Simple structures and a linear arrangement are the defining elements of Prouvé’s designs. They deny his high recognition value, as do the forms and materials, often borrowed from aircraft construction, that made up his buildings and furniture. Prouvé’s oeuvre encompasses a wide range of objects, from letter openers to door and window hardware, from lighting fixtures and furniture to facade elements and prefabricated houses, from modular building systems to large exhibition buildings – basically almost anything that lends itself to industrial production methods. In close collaboration with the Prouvé family, Vitra has been issuing new editions of the French designer’s designs since 2002 in order to give the extraordinary creations the status they deserve. Always with the approval of the heirs themselves, the new products are regularly revised and reissued.
